Serwaa Amihere recounts emotional journey after leaked tape incident

Ghanaian broadcaster Serwaa Amihere has opened up about the challenges she faced following the circulation of an intimate video purportedly involving her last year.

Speaking recently at the Ignite Youth Empowerment Thanksgiving Service, Serwaa shared a heartfelt account of how the incident impacted her and how a kind gesture from her close friend, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, helped her through a dark period.

In a candid moment during the event, Serwaa reflected on her struggle with depression at the time.

“I was depressed and crying at home that day,” she revealed. “Then she came and said, ‘Let’s go and buy ice cream.’ I wasn’t talking to anyone, but she came to pick me up. She took me to Osu, and I remember trying to wear a cap. She asked, ‘Why? Why do you want to hide your face? Let’s go.’ She bought me a big cup of ice cream and said, ‘Today, eat all the ice cream you can.’”

Serwaa expressed immense gratitude to Obuobia for her support, adding: “And she said she would take me out for lunch the next day. Somehow, we both ended up cancelling. But Auntie Obuobia, thank you because I never told you how grateful I was for that ride. It did me a lot of good.”

Year of challenges

The video, which surfaced on April 2, 2025, triggered a media storm and prompted an independent investigation by Serwaa’s employer, EIB Network.

In a press statement dated July 5, 202, the network announced that its thorough investigation found “no form of misconduct or breaches” on Serwaa’s part. The statement also confirmed that criminal proceedings were underway against individuals accused of unlawfully sharing the video.

Reflecting on the past year, Serwaa used her platform to caution young people about the importance of making wise decisions.

“I went through an extremely difficult year last year,” she said. “I’m not old. I’m still young, but I’m older than many of you here, and I am repeating again: be extremely careful about the decisions you make, because years later, they’ll come back and bite you really hard in the face. That’s exactly what happened to me last year.”

Serwaa also praised Obuobia for her unwavering kindness, calling her “an amazing person.”

She added, “She supports me and my sister and is always advising me. So thank you. I love you very much.”
